Why is my GFCI tripped sometimes when I go to check on my sump? Is there a safe way to correct this problem?

Yes, sump pumps are not supposed to be installed on GFCI circuits. Any type of motor can cause nuisance tripping of a GFCI. Sump pumps should be installed on a dedicated circuit, and it is recommended to have a backup pump installed in case of a power failure.
