Gas vs. Electric: Which Home Heating System Should You Choose?
April 18, 2018
If your furnace has reached the end of its lifespan and you’re preparing to install a new heating system, you’re probably debating which home heating fuel to use. Should you go with a natural gas furnace or an electrical heating system? There many different factors to consider: installation costs, operating costs, efficiency and environmental impact. In this blog post, we provide an overview of the different advantages of each so that you can make an informed decision.
Advantages of Gas Heat
- Lower operation costs: Gas furnaces are typically more costly to install and therefore present a larger investment up front. In addition, gas furnaces require more regular maintenance than electrical heating systems. However, almost everywhere in the country, natural gas is much cheaper than electricity. Therefore, gas furnaces have lower operating costs over time. Those savings are certainly worth considering, particularly if you live in a colder climate and use a lot of heat.
- Heat efficiency: Gas furnaces tend to heat homes more quickly and efficiently than electrical heating. Gas furnaces produce maximum heat as soon as the burners start running. Electrical heating systems, on the other hand, are more energy inefficient.
- Longevity: Although gas furnaces don’t last quite as long as electrical heating units, when well cared for, they should last up to 20 years.
Advantages of Electric Heat
- Cheaper and easier installation: An electrical heating system can be easily installed at a much lower cost than a gas furnace. This makes electric heat an appealing choice for many, especially those who live in warmer climates or areas where natural gas isn’t readily available.
- Fewer maintenance needs: While it’s still important to have an electrical heating system checked regularly, the maintenance plan is less rigorous than with a gas furnace. In particular, electric heat doesn’t involve the carbon monoxide and combustion safety concerns that accompany a gas furnace.
- Longevity: Electrical heating systems, when well cared for, can last up to 30 years—10 years longer than gas furnaces. So essentially, there are advantages and drawbacks to each type of heating system.
