Did you wake up this morning feeling colder than you should be feeling? You have probably woken up to the dreaded “no heat.” Even if you aren’t the next Bob Vila, there are a few things that you can do to try to get your furnace working again. Grab your extra layers and listen up.
The first thing may seem like a no brainer, but I will ask anyway. Is your main power on? If you have no power at you house your furnace will not work causing your house to cool off. Seems simple, but it’s the truth.
If you have power, next head to the main breaker box and see if any circuits have been tripped. If they were tripped, reset them and see if this solves your problem. (You also need to figure out why your circuit breaker was tripped. The circuits are meant to trip if something dangerous occurs. You may have an overloaded circuit, a short circuit or a ground fault.)
If it is not a tripped circuit, check your filter. Your furnace needs a clean air filter in order to run properly. If your filter is dirty your furnace has to work harder in order to get air through it. You can equate a dirty filter in a furnace to you having to breath through a straw. Not so easy, huh? If your filter is too dirty, it can cause your furnace to shut down. If this is the culprit, change your filter and see if this gets your furnace running again.
If you filter is clean or you’ve replaced the filter and your equipment still won’t run, then head to your thermostat. Is your thermostat is set correctly? Make sure that the temperature is set to where you want it and that the thermostat is set on “heat.” Also, check to see if your fan is running. Again, this may seem simple, but you never know what could have happened. Your thermostat could have gone bad or a rogue child could have messed with it.
Lastly, you may check your manual for any other troubleshooting tips. When Godby installs a HVAC system, we make sure that your manuals are stored right there with your equipment, that way they are always easy to locate.
